Mimi's Catery

I've been wanting to try Mimi's for a while, mostly because I wanted some fufu. I mean, it's as much fun to say as it is to eat. Fufu. Go ahead, say it a couple times. It's a ridiculous little word that makes me happy, and that's reason enough to go looking for lunch. I wandered in around 2 in the afternoon and had the entire restaurant to myself. It's a modest little place with African decorations, booths, handwritten menus and a pretty relaxed atmosphere. The waitress seemed a little awkward at first, although being the only customer in the place might have had something to do with that. Nothing unpleasant, just a little awkward. I ordered the oxtail, which came with a generous helping of fried rice, beans and the fufu I'd been looking forward to. The oxtail was rich, flavorful and covered in a nice savory sauce. The beans were good, the rice soaked up all that goodness, and then there was the fufu. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing with it. There's something embarrassingly entertaining about being a grown man sitting alone in a restaurant trying to figure out how to properly eat something that millions of people have been eating their entire lives. I'm certain I looked like an idiot, but I was a happy idiot. I grabbed a Jamaican Kola Champagne, which isn't champagne at all, but a sweet, fizzy soft drink. It was pretty good and went nicely with the rich oxtail. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. Good food, generous portions and something a little different from my usual lunch. I'd go back, although I might need a little more practice with the fufu. Or maybe not. I managed to get it into my mouth, which I figure is the primary objective of eating.
